ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Cape Lookout National Seashore is about 56 miles of undeveloped barrier islands. It is the southern part of the Outer Banks in North Carolina.


To qualify for an RV Pad housing area, volunteer must commit to working 32 hours a week.


The Volunteer RV area is in a communal area which is only accessible to staff and other volunteers. Location is directly adjacent to a waterfront area and on the edge of our walking trail.


Harkers Island has multiple smaller grocery and convenience stores within 10 minutes. Other larger stores, medical services, etc. are available in either Beaufort or Morehead City (Roughly 30-40 minutes away)


Duties:

- Preforms custodial and janitorial work which includes cleaning and stocking supplies at the park’s visitor center, restrooms, and performs general trash removal from offices, restrooms, boardwalk, and other public areas.

- Occasionally works on ladders to clean and maintain linoleum, wood, marble, and various kinds of floors, walls, and ceiling surfaces.

- Rove around Cape Lookout Lighthouse, answering questions for visitors.

- Assisting Interpretation Rangers in the Harkers Island Visitor Center, and with programs throughout the park.


Qualifications:

- Must be able to use common cleaning tools, vacuum cleaners, and common hand and power tools.

- Must be able to do all cleaning duties on their own without instruction. Must know the proper use of variety of special cleaning and sanitizing solutions and must be able to remove different kinds of stains from a wide variety of surfaces. In addition, must be able to clean and adjust the powered cleaning equipment.

- Must have a valid driver's license.

- Requires moderate physical effort when emptying trash cans; occasionally lift objects weighing over 50 pounds.

- Skills in Customer Service.


Work Environment:

- Work may be indoors or outdoors in direct sun, windy, and humid conditions. Biting insects may be present. Work involves standing for long periods. Some work may involve exposure to moderate to high levels of noise from heavy machinery.

- Slip trip and fall hazards

- Exposure to loud noises for long periods of time

- Exposure to direct sun for long periods of time
