Help an Adult Learner Unlock Their Potential - Become a Volunteer Tutor Today!
Are you looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community? Do you have a passion for helping adults improve their reading, writing, and technology skills? Join the Adult Literacy Program at Amador County Library and make a lasting impact in someone's life.
About Our Program:
The Adult Literacy Program at Amador County Library provides one-on-one tutoring to adults who want to improve their basic reading, writing, math or technology skills. Our learners are working toward personal, educational, and professional goals-whether it's advancing their career, completing their high school diploma, navigating digital technology, or simply gaining more confidence in everyday tasks like reading mail, managing finances, or using the internet. Your help can make a real difference!
Why Volunteer with Us?
- Transform Lives: Your time and expertise can help an adult learner gain the skills they need to succeed in their personal and professional life.
- Flexible Commitment: We understand your time is valuable, so we offer flexible hours to work with your schedule. You can meet with a learner on-site at the library during our operational hours or after hours at another location, such as a cafe.
- Comprehensive Training: You don’t need to be a teacher to be a great tutor! We provide free training, instructional resources, and ongoing support to ensure you feel equipped to help your student succeed.
- Match Based on Your Skills: Tutors do not need to be proficient in all areas of literacy or technology. We match you with students based on your strengths and interests, whether that’s reading, writing, math or teaching basic computer skills. You’ll work in an area where you feel comfortable and confident.
- Make a Broader Impact: In today’s world, literacy extends beyond reading and writing-it includes technology skills that are essential for personal and professional growth. Your tutoring will help fill these vital gaps.
- Meaningful Connections: Tutoring adults is a rewarding experience that allows you to build strong, supportive relationships while making a positive impact on your community.
What We’re Looking For:
- A Desire to Help: You don’t need prior teaching experience-just a genuine passion for supporting adult learners.
- Patience and Encouragement: Our learners may be at different stages of their education, so we need tutors who are patient, empathetic, and able to motivate others.
- A Commitment to At Least 1 hour a Week: We ask that volunteers commit to tutoring at least 1 hour per week. You’ll work with your learner at a time and place that fits both of your schedules.
As a Volunteer Tutor, You Will:
- Provide one-on-one tutoring to an adult learner in reading, writing, math or basic technology skills.
- Help your learner improve practical skills that will empower them in daily life, such as filling out forms, reading job applications, using a computer, and navigating the internet.
- With the help of the literacy coordinator, offer personalized learning plans based on your learner's goals and progress.
- Create a supportive, non-judgmental learning environment that fosters confidence and growth.
How to Get Started:
If you’re ready to make a difference in an adult learner’s life, we’d love to have you on our team! To learn more or sign up as a volunteer tutor, call or text the Amador County Library's Literacy Program at (209) 332-7803 or click "I want to help!" to send an email to literacy coordinator Mary Landreth (mlandreth@amadorgov.org).
