As a committee member, you’ll play an essential role in advancing our work supporting justice-impacted individuals in building financial health. Volunteers can contribute in several areas, with opportunities for leadership, strategic input, and hands-on involvement. This is not a board role, and committee members will not have voting power on board decisions. This role is a great way to gain valuable nonprofit governance experience and support finEQUITY’s mission.

Available Committees:

  • Nominating/Development: In sum, this committee recruits and develops new committee members and/or "guests of the board," handles elections, coordinates board retreats and training, and ensures board and committee composition aligns with the organization’s needs.
  • Finance, Compliance, Infrastructure, and Performance: This committee oversees the organization’s financial health, budgeting, financial reporting, and audits, reviews the 990 and budget, and opines on financial policies. They also create finEQUITY.org’s first evaluations of the board and CEO, maintain the board manual, and propose policy changes related to the board’s infrastructure (such as executive compensation).
  • Marketing/Communications, PR, and Fundraising: This committee focuses on identifying finEQUITY.org’s first in-person fundraising strategy or exploring other fundraising ideas, proposing communication strategies, gratitude events/tactics, and major gift plans. They can also design and propose media opportunities.

Role Options:

  • Co-Chair: Leads meetings, sets agendas, ensures the committee remains focused on its objectives, and reports to the board
  • Secretary: Records and distributes meeting minutes and manages the documentation and records of the committee's work
  • Committee Member: Participates in all committee activities, but does not have a designated role on the committee

Responsibilities:

  • Attend quarterly committee meetings (1-2 hours per meeting)
  • Actively participate in discussions, complete tasks, and provide updates
  • Collaborate through Slack and other designated channels

Time Commitment: Less than 8 hours per month

Term: Each committee member is expected to serve a one-year term, with the option for renewal based on mutual agreement.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven leadership background in an area relevant to one of the committees, such as finance, marketing, communications, or development
  • You are passionate about advancing the financial health of justice-impacted individuals and families
  • Ability to commit to scheduled meetings, meet deadlines, and complete assigned tasks
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a group setting, communicate effectively, and engage with diverse perspectives

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a nonprofit governance or committee role is helpful but not required

Location:

41 SCHERMERHORN STREET SUITE 1002, BROOKLYN, NY 11201, US

Mission Statement

Established in 2019, our mission is to help those who have been impacted by long-term incarceration, mass incarceration and financial exclusion build their credit profiles as part of their reentry journey.

Description

finEQUITY.org is a community sourced tech-nonprofit focused on the financial health of families in spite of incarceration. Our vision is to build tools and services to further a prison-to-prosperity pipeline. We advance the financial futures of community members or heads of the household who have been impacted by lengthy incarceration. We unlock access to financial health, and in particular, affordable apartments, transportation, utilities, cell phones and financial services such as banking, credit and savings. We do this by offering free, virtual, and easy access to credit and debt information, a free micro-loan program to establish credit, as well as a free in-prison program that teaches participants about finances and its impact upon release from a prison facility.
