FY25: Maintenance of Native Plant Display Garden

Homestead National Historical Park has a native plant display that is active from April until October, demonstrating the species that once flourished here and are being restored over time. The display is located just past the Farm Loop Trail and the Suspension Bridge. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in maintaining the space for both the species and to build accessibility for visitors. You will be working directly with the Natural Resource Manager.
Duties
· Mulching landscape beds with the Natural Resource Manager to start off the season
· Removing weeds around and near the native plant demonstration
· Clearing the area of debris should there be any
· Informing visitors of special events, ranger programs, and other park information
Work Schedule
You will be working two-hour shifts anywhere from once a week to three times a week.
Skills and Expectations
· Experience with plant identification or willingness to learn
· An interest in conservation, horticulture, or natural resource management
· Be knowledgeable about safety procedures and protocols
· Being a representative of the National Park Service in an inclusive manner
Work Environment
You will be working outside in the elements. There is a potential for working in extreme heat and rain. Job hazards include, but are not limited to:
· Exposure to poison ivy
· Biting and stinging insects
· Sun exposure
