Classroom tutoring helps struggling high school students gain credits toward graduation. We ask for your committment of one 90 minute class per week for the school year, though we sometimes accept volunteers who can be involved for only one semester. Tutor in math, English or social science. The teacher will welcome you and encourage students to accept your help.
Participating in a public school classroom requires clearance from the Department of Justice and a negative TB test. We offer support through the clearance process, a training session, a chance to give us weekly feedback on your experience, and occasional meetings with other volunteers. Please see our website, oaklandserves.org. (Note that we call what we do "mentoring," as it sometimes involves advising students on more that the academic subject at hand.)

Mission Statement
Our mission is to improve the future of high school youth by increasing their success in high school today. Students that struggle to stay on track in high school are at risk of dropping out. We put mentors in high school classes to work with students needing extra support to keep them on the path to graduation. Don't let the door shut on these students. Join us today!
Description
Since 2018, Oakland Serves has been helping high school students graduate, focusing on underserved and minority communities in which students may face a variety of challenges that impede their success. We work with OUSD, with schools and teachers to identify where our mentors can have the biggest impact on student achievement. We match our volunteer mentors with whole classrooms and with individual students as needed to increase the ability of as many students as possible to progress to graduation.
