Project Description: Clearing transects for brown tree snake and invasive species control. The main objective for the day will be clearing vegetation along transect lines to allow easier access for brown tree snake, little fire ant, and other invasive species control. This is part of a larger project to create a sanctuary for native bird species, which require a predator-free area to thrive on Guam.


Project Duration: Oct. 2024 - Oct. 2025 Approximate Hours that can be earned: 4 - 40


Description of Duties:

Volunteers will assist park staff in clearing vegetation along pre-marked transects at Asan Beach Park. Physical activities would include hiking and walking in uneven surfaces, bending, and lifting objects no heavier than 10-20 lbs., and using machetes, loppers, saws, and other cutting equipment to clear trail areas (NO chainsaws).

Main duties of the volunteer will include but are not limited to:

• Listen to and abide by safety regulations and perform tasks that are within their physical capability.

• Wear personal protective equipment such as gloves, closed toed shoes, and goggles.

• Clearing vegetation using machetes, loppers, and saws.

• Load and unload tools, equipment, or materials.

Volunteer Working Conditions:

• Hot, humid, and under full sun exposure.

• The volunteer must take safety precautions for sun protection and heat related illnesses by applying sunscreen, wearing a hat, and keeping hydrated.

• Use sharp tools.

• Work near/on marine coastal landscapes.

Responsibilities:

• Listen to and abide by safety regulations and perform tasks that are within their physical capability.

• Must be able to work in group settings and be cognizant of language and conduct in front of the public.

• Wear proper attire for the activities of the event, such as closed toed shoes, eye protection, and hand protection.

• Wear sun protective attire.

• Keep hydrated and rest often to prevent heat related illnesses.

• Do not enter the ocean for any reason.

• All volunteers must read, fill out and sign the National Park Service official 301a or 301b volunteer forms and volunteer position order to participate.

• Volunteers under the age of 18 are not allowed to participate in this activity due to the hazardous nature of the work.

Goal/Outcome:

The 2024 Transect Clearing Volunteer can expect to become more knowledgeable about environmental issues/threats to the natural resources within the park and in Guam. They will also contribute to their community by helping with the removal of invasive brown tree snakes and little fire ants. Ultimately, this work will allow for the control of bird predators and pests at Asan Beach Park and allow for the reintroduction of native bird species for the first time in Guam.

Knowledge/Skills/Expertise Desired:

• Ages 18 and above.

• Safe use of hand tools.
