DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Primarily provides front line customer service by staffing the Capitol Reef National Park visitor center desk and occasionally while roving. Distributes information and orients visitors to the park. Provides 30-minute geology talks to visitors and informal interpretation at the visitor center and while roving. Learns park resources by reviewing books, maps, park research materials, and other documents previously prepared by park rangers and other professionals. Issues backcountry permits and educates visitors regarding the requirements for backcountry hiking and camping, and the rules and regulations, etc. Solo hiking and trail roving patrols may be required. As assigned and with supervision, performs various administrative and collateral duties which may include: preparing documents, gathering routine information for reports, compilation of statistical data, cleaning and housekeeping projects, inventories, photography, and response to information requests.


WORKING HOURS / SCHEDULE / EXPECTED DURATION OF APPOINTMENT


Work schedule is part-time of 32 hours per week; 8-hour days. Lieu days will be determined based on operational needs.


REIMBURSEMENT TO BE PROVIDED


Park housing will be provided at the government’s cost. Candidate will have one private bedroom in a shared multi-room, coed home with 2 - 5 roommates sharing kitchen, bathroom and living space. Specific rules and restrictions apply including no pets (in all non-permanent government housing) or family (in shared quarters only). Detailed housing information is available. No monetary reimbursement is provided.


EQUIPMENT TO BE OPERATED


Government vehicles (requiring a valid driver’s license), electronics, computers, a variety of office equipment, audio-visual equipment, and other related items.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS AND GUIDANCE


Selected candidate will be co-supervised by a permanent interpretive Park Ranger and the Visitor Services Program Manager. The candidate will receive guidance, orientation and training from a variety of staff members. Formal training is minimal but may include online training courses and on-the-job activities including orientation trips in the park and tours.
