ORGANIZATION: Black in Mayberry



Become a Project Leader to help Black in Mayberry host an Art Therapy Session centered around empowering Afro-centric beauty through self-portrait!

Why: As a part of their mission to combat racism through the arts, Black in Mayberry hosts healing workshops to help address and remedy racial trauma. The healing art therapy sessions encourage relaxation, through engaging in an artist led art workshop. Each workshop is themed in order to highlight specific racial issues that negatively impact the health and wellbeing of Black people in America. Participants do not need to be artists or artistic, the art is simply the tool for helping our community bring profound emotions and deep pain to surface and out onto a canvas. This program is a part of our initiative to promote better mental health and well-being within Black communities.

Who: Black in Mayberry is primarily focused on addressing the systemic and institutional racism that robs, burdens and disrupts the lives of Black people in the United States of America. Through the application of art and education we strive for political, social, economic and legal change.

What to Expect: In general Project Leaders will be ask of the following:

Set-up of art supplies and tables decroatively

Setting up refreshment tables

Arranging the tables and chair placements

Assisting the teaching artist with providing addtional art supplies to participants

Assisting the performance artist with set-up and taking breaks (this means putting on music in the intermission and ensuring instruments are not moved)

Assisting participants with location of additional art supplies, refreshments, and sanitary facilities

Assisting with bringing the mic to participants to share thoughts.

Providing gift bags to participants as they leave.

Break dowm: Replacing tables and chairs to be packed away along with art supplies and decorations.

Lead volunteers with their various roles/projects during the event.

Ensure volunteers are working safely, efficiently, and are having fun!

All project leaders will receive trainings the day of. No experience is necessary!

Water will be provided!

What's Required:

Senstivity and awareness to volunteer in a primarily Black space that is focused on topics such as racism and the intesection where art meets activisim.

Must be able to lift up to 15lbs.

Must be able to be on your feet during your shift in order to move throughout the event to assist participants with art supplies, refreshments, etc. (This is a calm and slow pace event, so seating will also be provided for volunteers).

Parking is available for all volunteers. More details will be provided upon signup!

Volunteer dress code is black (a black shirt will suffice).
