Fortitude is a San Francisco Bay Area-based nonprofit formed to assist young adults in developing a healthy sense of self as they design a path to a successful trades career. We seek to fortify the trades workforce and support the needs of our local community through multi-week on-site programs. Fortitude is the place for young adults to learn more than trade skills, it is a place where they can learn life mastery skills that will guide them to a more fulfilling life and meaningful career. Our current team includes the Founder and a nonprofit operations consultant. Taking advantage of recent funding, strategic plans are underway to expand the team and program in 2025.

Position Overview & Ideal Candidate Profile

We’re seeking an experienced, passionate and skilled Trades Training Instructor to join our team. In this role, you will be instrumental in providing high-quality training in construction trades, ensuring participants develop the necessary skills while adhering to safety protocols. Your expertise will help empower individuals as they pursue their careers in the construction industry. You’ll offer a coach/mentor mentality and inspire and uplift participants while developing their skills. A supportive and adaptable approach is essential and your ability to encourage and motivate individuals will be crucial in fostering a positive environment that promotes growth and resilience. An entrepreneurial mindset would also be beneficial as you partner with the small team to grow our organization and our impact.

Schedule and Work Environment

This role is pivotal to the work of the organization. The founder and Board of Directors agree that the delivery of the curriculum may be accomplished in a part-time or a full-time role. Those seeking a full-time position will have significant experience in other areas such as stakeholder engagement, fundraising and/or small business/nonprofit operations. Our curriculum is delivered in a local warehouse/workshop environment in four, 8-week cohorts, tentatively scheduled to begin in January, May, August and October. The weeks outside of the cohorts are spent in organizational development. The organization will be moving into permanent office space in 2025.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Oversight

  • Ensure overall adherence to safety protocols and practices within the training environment.

Curriculum Instruction & Shop Management

  • Deliver comprehensive instruction on the construction training curriculum, including:

    • Carpentry skills (rough framing, drywall, finish carpentry)

    • Best practices for foundation to roof construction

    • Basic introductions to electrical, plumbing, and cement work as needed.

    • Provide guidance on the proper use and handling of all hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment.

    • Maintain an inventory of all tools and equipment used on the job daily.

    • Provide instructional support for the Life Mastery - Career Services curriculum.

Project Coordination

  • Scope various partner projects (e.g., foundation concrete pour, framing workshop) and prepare requisitions for materials.

  • Identify and coordinate the number of volunteers required for each project.

Evaluation of Skills, Reporting & Progress Monitoring

  • Complete daily job reports detailing participant engagement, accidents, and submit material requisitions to the administrative team.

  • Monitor students' time and assess their progress throughout the training program.

  • Oversee the evaluation process for assessing student knowledge and skills in construction trades.

  • Attend case management meetings as required to support participant development.

Personal and Vocational Counseling

  • Assist participants with personal and vocational counseling to develop leadership skills and support job search skills development.

Community Engagement

  • Lead participants in community service projects to foster a sense of social responsibility.

Team Collaboration

  • Attend all required meetings and retreats to collaborate with team members and enhance program effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in construction trades

  • Previous teaching or training experience preferred

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning atmosphere.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary, based on experience. Estimated hourly rate: $45-55

Description

Fortitude is a program in service to the community, in which young people learn the skills to build a career in the construction field, and have the opportunity to develop those skills by building "ADU’s" (accessory dwelling units or tiny houses). The ADU’s will be offered to municipalities (in accordance with established regulations,) to be used as housing for those experiencing homelessness and other low-income people, often serving beneficiaries from the types of communities where the participants themselves have grown up.
