Position: Transcriptionist - Lake Superior Collection Management Center

Location: Keweenaw History Center; Calumet, Michigan

Description: This position takes place at the Keweenaw History Center at the Keweenaw National Historical Park. The park's collection encompasses millions of unique items, all of which are important in some way to the story of the Keweenaw Peninsula and its surroundings. Included in those millions are oral interviews with individuals with interesting stories to tell. The primary duty of this position is to transcribe these conversations into a readable document so that these stories may be preserved for the future.

Scope and Effect: The participant will perform needed transcription services for the further dissemination and organization of transcribed materials. The work performed affects the preservation of individual stories for generations to come.

Supervision: The supervisor establishes required quantity and quality, deadlines, and priorities, and provides instructions for new assignments. The volunteer is relied upon to properly handle museum objects and to carry assignments through to completion. Unusual situations are referred to the supervisor. Work is reviewed for accuracy, quality, and compliance with standards and procedures.

Physical

Demands: Long periods of sitting, standing, and bending. The Keweenaw History Center is not wheelchair accessible; basic mobility is required. The volunteer may be required to lift boxes weighing as much as 30 pounds.

Minimum Age: 18 years

Minimum Time

Requirement: Recommend regular schedule, but variable according to volunteers’ commitment and suitability in position. A minimum of 4 hours weekly, or a 16-hour monthly equivalent is required.

Anticipated work

schedule: Work Schedule is flexible. Weekdays, usually between hours of 9-5 (perhaps in 4-6-hour shifts). There is not work on weekends or federal holidays.

Work

Environment: Most of work is performed in the Keweenaw History Center, which is fully lit, heated, and cooled. Participants should prepare for the weather outside, depending on the season .
