Join the Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS) for a volunteer stewardship session on Saturday, October 26th, 2024!
Volunteers will work under the guidance of the FOPOS stewardship staff to perform riparian and forest restoration, invasive species removal, and plant native species in the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve. We will focus on timely efforts and maintaining our natural lands for the fall months.
We have two volunteer sessions: 10AM-12PM and 1PM-3PM. Please pick the timeslot that works best for you! You are also welcome to attend both sessions.
Meetup Location: Mountain Lakes House Parking Lot Here is a link to the parking lot location on Google maps & Apple Maps.
Directions & Parking: We will meet in the parking lot of the Mountain Lake House which is located in the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve. The address of the preserve is 57 Mountain Avenue, Princeton, NJ 08540. You can drive, bike, or walk down the long paved driveway entrance to preserve, marked by a series of black mail boxes. Mission Statement
Founded in 1969, we are a non-profit, tax-exempt organization devoted to the following:
In Princeton: Acquiring open space for preservation, protecting natural resources, maintaining and extending trails and providing environmental education.
In the Princeton Region: Working with other groups to support efforts to preserve and protect open space and the environment.
Description
Friends of Princeton Open Space is a non-profit organization that has helped establish over 1,000 acres of parkland and a network of interconnecting trails that nearly circles Princeton. Through the contributions of hundreds of people in the community, FOPOS helped to raise $4.5 million for the purchase of land and acquisition of easements on properties that might have been bulldozed for development. In addition to property acquisition, FOPOS also leads in land stewardship, from creating and maintaining hiking trails, including boardwalks and footbridges, to the removal of invasive species and the replanting of native varieties. FOPOS sponsors nature walks and plant workshops that are free and open to the public.
