To celebrate the first anniversary of Caged Dreams film released on October 10th, 2023, on World Mental Health Day, we are launching Healing Horizons . This groundbreaking pilot program will aim to provide culturally sensitive, trauma-informed mental health care to asylum seekers, undocumented individuals, and those impacted by immigration detention. Mental health care is often inaccessible to these individuals due to their lack of documentation, insurance, and financial resources, especially in their first few years in the U.S. We are calling on therapists to join us in this mission to offer meaningful mental health support and make a real impact in their healing journeys.

Mission Statement

Caged Dreams’ mission is to provide trauma-informed mental health services to asylum seekers, refugees, and undocumented individuals, ensuring access to compassionate care regardless of immigration status. Through telehealth and in-person services, we connect individuals with culturally sensitive therapists who understand their unique experiences. Our goal is to address the emotional and psychological needs of those navigating complex immigration processes, promoting healing, resilience, and long-term well-being. We strive to empower individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity, hope, and strength.

Description

Asylum seekers and undocumented individuals often endure severe trauma, both in their home countries and during migration. Research shows that 35% to 50% of refugees experience PTSD, anxiety, and depression, yet many face significant barriers to accessing mental health care. Without trauma-informed therapy, they are left to manage emotional distress on their own, which can have long-term impacts.

We are seeking licensed therapists, mental health professionals, and students in related fields to volunteer and provide essential support. Volunteers with experience in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and cross-cultural counseling are especially valuable. Licenses in clinical social work, professional counseling, marriage and family therapy, or psychology are preferred, though students pursuing these qualifications are also encouraged to join.

As a volunteer, you will not only offer direct care but also help connect individuals to therapists within our network who align with their cultural background, language, and personal experiences. By promoting cultural sensitivity, you’ll build trust and ensure more effective support for healing. Your work will contribute to both the immediate emotional recovery of individuals and their long-term well-being.

By joining us, you’ll make a profound impact on the mental health journey of those who need it most, providing the care, understanding, and respect they deserve.
