The Washington Talking Book & Braille Library (WTBBL) builds community and provides equitable access to information and reading materials for Washington residents unable to read standard print. WTBBL has more than 200 volunteers working with us, and we are proud of their passion to work in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.

VOLUNTEER POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The sighted proofreading monitor partners with a tactile braille proofreader to ensure that the braille version of a book matches the print version. The proofreading monitor follows the print copy and listens closely to the tactile proofreader to ensure the braille matches the print text. Proofreading teams can work onsite at WTBBL (free parking provided) or arrangements to meet off-site or online can be made.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Follow the print copy and listen while the braille proofreader reads the text aloud.
Indicate any discrepancies and mark the errors for correction.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
Strong listening skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Fast response time to note a discrepancy.
Ability to work in a team and maintain a consistent schedule.

TIME COMMITMENT:
Minimum 2 hours weekly, Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Volunteering at the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library makes a difference in people’s lives! Nearly 200 people donate thousands of hours each year making books, programs, and other resources available to those with print disabilities. WTBBL is committed to creating an inclusive, supportive environment that recognizes diversity and cultural competence as integral components of excellence. We invite volunteers to contribute to that goal and believe our environment is enhanced when diverse groups of people with diverse ideas come together to collaborate.
