ORGANIZATION: FOOD LEADS

Participate in the fight for food equity while developing professional skills as a member of our Young Professionals Board.

As a member of the board, you will play a crucial role generating ideas and leading projects to build capacity for Food Leads, a Columbus-based nonprofit focused on reducing racial and socioeconomic health disparities that contribute to chronic disease. Not only will you help Food Leads expand the reach of their meal kit and education programs, but you will also have the opportunity to develop skills around nonprofit development, social media management, fundraising, community engagement, and more, while networking with other professionals in your community.

The Volunteer Role:

  • Meet once a week in a laid-back environment with other Young Professionals Board Members to discuss capacity-building efforts for Food Leads and Food Leads’ Near East Cafe
  • Work closely with staff members to give input and ideas on social media management, fundraising, community engagement and programming, event planning, partnership opportunities, and marketing
  • Assist with implementing capacity building efforts by leading projects and executing ideas; this may include creating social media content, creating and distributing marketing materials, planning and executing community and fundraising events, finding and researching grants, or other activities as needed, based upon volunteer’s personal expertise and interests

Benefits:

  • Opportunity to develop professional skills
  • Opportunity to network and build relationships with like-minded young professionals
  • Opportunity to gain experience in nonprofit and small business management
  • Flexible schedule that accommodates your availability

Mission Statement

Food Leads' mission is to empower our community to build nourishing relationships with food to reduce racial and socioeconomic health disparities that contribute to chronic disease.

Description

Founded in 2021, Food Leads makes it easier for Black and low-income residents to manage their chronic conditions with improved nutrition.

Through partnerships with community organizations and local farms, Food Leads offers a meal kit service with recipes curated by local chefs and dieticians that are diabetic friendly, heart healthy, interesting, and flavorful, which prioritize fresh, locally sourced ingredients from Columbus-area farms that focus on regenerative and sustainable agricultural methods. Food Leads has also provided nutrition education programming that teaches participants with diabetes or prediabetes how to select and enjoy foods that are healthy for their blood sugars.

In partnership with Too Good Eats, Food Leads has most recently opened Near East Cafe, a cafe offering fresh and healthy menu options that are both delicious and affordable, while offering a welcoming gathering space for the community.
