Title: Field Data Collector
Department or Team: Conservation Program
Responsible to: Adventure Scientists
Works With: Biodiversity staff
Description of Role: Volunteer helps support the California Biodiversity project with Adventure Scientists. This project is in partnership with the California Institute for Biodiversity, to explore and document insect and soil biodiversity to support the California 30X30 Pathways Strategy (to conserve 30% of the state of California by 2030). The volunteer will directly contribute to conservation, by contributing to large-scale data collection through citizen/community science.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Collect soil and/or insect samples in permitted areas such as National Forests across California
- Ship soil and/or insect samples back to Adventure Scientists for proper organization
- Manage own safety and trip planning
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Complete online training and check equipment kit upon mailing
- Participate in Adventure Scientists’ Events as desired
Skills/Qualifications Needed:
- 18 years or older
- Passion for outdoor and nature
- Willingness to be involved in scientific data collection project
- Eagerness and openess to learn and adapt
- Plan trip including ensuring personal safety and preparedness
Desired Experience:
- No prior experience required
- Strong sense of adventure and willingness to learn and adapt
Training: Training, and all gear necessary to successfully complete data collection will be provided. After signing up for the project, volunteers will be guided through a short online training to learn how to collect data, location scout, and submit their collected soil and insect samples.
Time Commitment: Time per week varies, and is largely up to the discretion of the volunteer. Training on-line, asynchronously may take between 30 minutes to an hour. Field data collection may take between 20 minutes and several hours, depending on the volunteer’s site selection and personal setup time.

We achieve our mission by mobilizing and training outdoor enthusiasts and local communities to collect high-quality scientific data that are difficult to access, require too large a scale, or are too costly to obtain with traditional methods.
