Overview

The Center for the Integration & Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) is a social services organization that works to integrate new immigrants from South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America into the socio-economic and civic life of American society while maintaining pride in their cultural heritage. CIANA is seeking a Spanish-speaking Education Administrative Intern to carry out basic administrative tasks and calling and completing forms for clients in the Education Programs. This is a great opportunity for a college student seeking to complete fieldwork hours and to gain hands-on experience in education or a non-profit organization.

Responsibilities

(*) Answer door and welcome guests to the office and direct them to the appropriate staff member;

(*) Conduct general intakes with clients and provide them with information for the service requested (ESL, civics, legal, etc);

(*) Enter client information into our database and Google Platforms;

(*) Answer the main phone line, respond to inquiries, and take messages when necessary;

(*) Return calls to clients when needed;

(*) Help organize education materials both in the office and online.

Qualifications

(*) Interested in Education;

(*) Fluency in Spanish required;

(*) Highly organized and detail-oriented;

(*) Exhibits professional and courteous demeanor and phone etiquette;

(*) Respectful and sensitive to other cultures;

(*) Experience using Google Platforms is strongly preferred.

Location

(*) At CIANA’s office on 36-12 34th Avenue, 3rd Floor, Astoria, NY 11106.

(*) By the Steinway St R M Subway station or the N W Broadway Subway station.

(*) The Q66, Q101, Q102, and Q104 bus routes are also just a few blocks away.

Time Commitment

(*) Regular schedule required.

(*) Interns must commit to serving 10 - 15 hours a week at minimum.

*This is an in-person position and you must report to our office in Astoria.

To provide special transitional services which will lead to the successful integration of newcomers into American society while continuing to maintain pride in their own cultural heritage .

Description

Immigrants and refugees will be provided with the tools to emerge from poverty, isolation, and linguistic barriers to become full, productive American citizens. Our services promote family well-being and stability, provide counseling and support services, and expose newcomers to the social, economic and educational opportunities available to them. Professional social services will include ESOL and civics classes, citizenship preparation, adult literacy, child welfare and youth services, legal and immigration assistance, financial literacy, micro credit and finance, employment assistance, and information and referral services. Newcomers will gain a deeper understanding of western culture and how to incorporate its positive qualities into their lives without fear of losing their culture and identity; it will help them shape an identity that encompasses the best of both worlds and prevents their isolation and marginalization.
