Intro
Come and have a fun day with Protect Earth!
P r otect Earth is a registered charity, helping farmers and landowners increase tree cover and biodiversity on their land. We plant trees on unused and degraded farmland, use trees to provide shade and shelter for crops and livestock, create wildflower meadows, and help with tree maintenance for saplings that are struggling. We regret that we are unable to assist in supporting visa applications for people travelling from outside the UK to volunteer with us.
What is happening?
Protect Earth owns 28 hectares of land near Lloyney at Goytre Hill. Over the coming years we intend to plant around 8 hectares of Goytre Hill with native broadleaf trees including Oak, Birch, Alder, Rowan, Wild Cherry, Hazel and Hawthorn. In time this woodland creation project will benefit wildlife including declining bird species like Pied Flycatcher and Wood Warbler. We will not plant trees on existing valuable habitat - habitat that already has species such as Skylark, Whinchat and Tree Pipit - instead this habitat will be maintained and improved. Our aim is to protect and enhance Goytre Hill’s biodiversity as well as sequester carbon. But, as the site develops, to also provide a place of quiet enjoyment for local people.Full details will be sent out a week before the event, including the address and meeting place.
We appreciate volunteers who are able to come for part of the day, a whole day or even the whole weekend, and children are welcome. Businesses, sports groups and other clubs are also invidted to join us. We love it when the local community gets involved in their area, and also welcome guests from further away. It allows us to make new friends, catch up with friends we've made, and learn what people love about their communities while talking to them about enriching local biodiversity.
What do I need to bring/ know?
No previous experience is necessary, we’ll train you up and provide all the necessary equipment. Please come dressed for the weather.
We will provide tea, coffee, and biscuits to keep you going, but please bring your own lunch and snacks, and a refillable water bottle as there will be water available to top up.
Will there be parking?
- There is on-site parking.
Whenever possible we encourage volunteers to car share, use public transportation, or even cycle, to keep emissions down and avoid stressing parking space.
What happens if we need to cancel?
Bad weather is difficult to plan for. In general, we will continue to plant if it’s raining, but if it’s looking dangerous or the ground is frozen we will have to cancel an event. We will try and notify you as soon as we possibly can, and you’ll be invited to the rescheduled event. If you need to cancel please drop us a quick email to tell us, so that we know how many volunteers to expect on the day.

Mission Statement
There are many ways to help combat the escalating climate and biodiversity crises. Our way is to create and restore woodlands, meadows, and hedgerows. The advantages of creating and restoring natural ecosystems in the UK are many: removing carbon from the atmosphere, reducing the risk of flooding during heavy downpours, and enhancing air quality. Protect Earth works with landowners, environmental organisations, and the general public to achieve an outcome that is beneficial for everyone. We help land owners plant trees on their land, and we buy degraded farmland to reforest ourselves.
Description
Protect Earth is a registered charity in England and Wales. Our purpose is simple: we aim to plant, and help people plant, as many trees as possible in the UK to help mitigate the climate crisis.
We work with landowners, environmental and voluntary organisations, and the general public to access land, plant trees and monitor their development.
Founded in 2020, we work for the common good and are focused on action. We are also dedicated to good governance, with a transparent ethos. Every penny donated to us and spent is for one thing: preserving this planet for future generations.
As well as sourcing land and planting trees, we assist with: resources and education, project management and ongoing support for the forests we have planted.
Protecting the planet for future generations doesn't happen in a vacuum. We are proud to have formed strong relationships with housing developers, local authorities, professional funders, individual donors and NGOs.
In the 2022/23 season, Protect Earth reached a remarkable milestone, planting 25,671 trees
We also plant wildflower meadows and remove invasive species.
