About the Position:
In this position, you will be placed with Table to Table in Iowa City, a mission-driven nonprofit that bridges the gap between abundance and hunger. Our mission is to increase food equity and reduce environmental harm by collecting and redistributing surplus food through partners to people who can use it.
As a Communications Strategist VISTA, you will streamline communications processes for a regional network of food donors and other allied organizations. Your service term will leave you well-equipped to coordinate an organization’s outreach to volunteers, donors, and the public. You will research and support applications for new sources of funding and spearhead marketing of the organization’s participation in campaigns such as 1% for the Planet. You will implement regular updates to Table to Table’s website and social media accounts with a particular focus on accessibility for diverse audiences as well as ease of use for food transportation workers seeking to donate rejected product that is still safe to eat. You will also develop and share consistent county-level service information with the community to build broad awareness of resources available among the general public.
About Nourish Iowa:
As a Nourish Iowa member, you will serve among a cohort of VISTA members throughout Iowa, sponsored by the Center for Energy & Environmental Education at the University of Northern Iowa, & will have frequent opportunities to share knowledge within this community through regular cohort-wide meetings & site visits. In addition to all standard AmeriCorps VISTA benefits, you will engage regularly with thought leaders in local food and be invited to professional development opportunities coordinated by a VISTA Leader in your cohort.

Our VISTA projects and partner organizations pursue equity in the food system for all Iowans, with the intent to improve the intersections of the food system with public health, community nutrition, gainful employment, inclusive communities, and economic justice. Whether through farmer training and the development of an incubator farm; the Garden in Every Lot program which simplifies and promotes home production of fresh food; the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust which preserves and redistributes farmland for future generations and disadvantaged populations; or We Arose Co-op and Feed Iowa First which have aggressively increased supplies of local food in pantries and other hunger relief outlets; Our organization is making strides toward the eradication of poverty, a core tenet of VISTA since its establishment in the 1960s.
