Main Goals for Position:

The Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program at ABLI promotes a creative means of communicating the park's national significance and its relevance to park visitors by connecting visitors to park resources through the arts.


Description:

Are you a painter, soundscape recorder, musician, sculptor, writer, or other form of artist? Are you looking to inspire at the Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace? This is the position for you. Preform your preferred art medium in demonstrations at the park to visitors, youth groups, and K-12 th students. Demonstrations may take place as performances, tutorials, or digital displays depending on art medium used. This may include working with groups in the Visitor Centers, at the Memorial Building, or on-site on trails or the grounds to conduct activities. Choose a schedule that works best for you, setting your own dates of availability.

Position Duties:

As a volunteer, you will provide a fun and educational experience for visitors, youth groups, and students; helping them understand the significance of the resources of the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace. Volunteers may be required to wear the provided volunteer uniform and badge and represent the National Park Service by acting in a courteous and professional manner with visitors, park staff, and other volunteers.

  • Produce at least one piece of work in chosen medium that reflects the cultural and/or natural resources of the park.
  • Present at least one public educational program within the park.
  • Coordinate with supervisor to set up a work schedule during residency.
  • Communicate with supervisor and park staff about daily work plans and location.

Qualifications:

Volunteer must have experience as an artist, and must share art portfolio with park. Volunteer artist must have demonstratable experience and talent judged by the park to be beneficial for both parties.

  • Weather Preparedness : Artists should be prepared for changing weather conditions, with appropriate gear for both hot and cold weather.

Physical Demands:

  • Mobility : Artists may need to walk or hike to different locations within the park to find inspiration or set up their workspaces, which can involve uneven terrain.
  • Manual Labor : Depending on the artistic medium, there may be physical demands such as lifting materials, setting up installations, or carrying equipment.
  • Endurance : Working outdoors for extended periods can require stamina, especially during warmer months or while participating in community events.
  • Adaptability : Artists must be flexible in adapting to both environmental and community dynamics, responding to visitors and weather changes as they create their work.
