Are you passionate about supporting language accessibility for survivors of gender-based violence?Do you have writing (typing), reading, and speaking language skills in Bengali, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, Spanish, Tagalog, Urdu, or Vietnamese ? Join the Womankind Volunteer Language Group!

Description:

  • Womankind is launching Volunteer Language Groups in select Asian languages and Spanish to increase language access for survivors of gender-based violence. Volunteers will be placed in specific, non-English language cohorts that they have moderate to strong reading, writing, and speaking fluency in. Volunteers will support Womankind with as-needed short-term and long-term remote translation projects and occasional interpretation needs year-round.
  • As language needs arise, Womankind will reach out to volunteers for support with short-term or long-term translation or interpretation projects. Translation requests may include translating, proofreading, or transcribing outreach materials, educational PowerPoints, group facilitation guides, social media content, website information, surveys, and more. Occasional interpretation requests include support group instructions, community event activities, survey administration, and more.
  • Training is required to become a member of a Volunteer Language Group.

Time Commitment:

  • Volunteers are expected to be active members of their language group for at least one year, offering support to 3 or more projects during this period.
  • Timelines and deadlines will vary, depending on the type of project.

Location:

  • Translation (written/typing) support can occur remotely.
  • Interpretation (spoken) support may be provided remotely or in person in Brooklyn, Queens, or Manhattan.

Requirements:

  • Be 18+ years of age
  • Have moderate to strong reading, writing (typing), and speaking fluency in any of these languages: Bengali, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, Spanish, Tagalog, Urdu, Vietnamese. Other Asian languages welcomed!
  • Reliable in meeting deadlines, communicative and responsive through email, and has patience
  • Access to a laptop, computer, or electronic device where remote translation requests can be completed through Word Documents, PDFs, and email
  • Attend a translation and interpretation training in November 2024 (date TBD)

Womankind brings critical resources and deep cultural competency to help survivors of all ages find refuge, recovery, and renewal from domestic violence, human trafficking, and sexual violence. Through our programs, we offer a wide variety of services in 18+ Asian languages and dialects, including: a toll-free 24/7 multilingual helpline, safe and confidential emergency housing, culturally-informed counseling, family law and immigration legal assistance, wellness activities, creative arts therapy, support groups, and economic empowerment workshops. We are an expert in serving Asian communities, yet our services are valuable and available to all. Whether in our services or in our increasing advocacy and policy work, Womankind first centers the survivor by uplifting them to control their own lives and narratives.
