Dance Entropy is seeking volunteer board members! This is a volunteer position with a small time commitment, 1.5hrs per month.

Dance Entropy's mission is to create a platform for multicultural understanding through dance, nurture connections between dance creation and education, build community among dance artists, and foster physicality, creativity and empowerment in underserved communities. Founded in 1998, Valerie Green/Dance Entropy believes in humanizing movement, both in Ms. Green’s critically acclaimed choreographic work and the company’s mission to plant creative seeds in communities across the world. Intersecting mortal and transcendent, sensual and sophisticated, visceral and self-aware, VG/DE invites the artist, the audience-the human-into a compelling, physical experience. Based out of its home studio, Green Space in Queens, NY, VG/DE combines performance and specialized outreach programs to inspire communities in cultural institutions throughout the world. VG/DE strives to break down systemic race, gender and other identity barriers to fulfill our ultimate goal of collectiveness and inclusivity through dance. As a professional nonprofit dance company, the communities we engage with have included at risk youth, adolescents, trauma survivors, differently-abled persons, senior citizens and aspiring/professional dancers.

Mission Statement

Dance Entropy is a professional not-for-profit modern dance company founded in 1998, featuring a multi-ethnic company of 8 talented dancers. Dance Entropy supports the vision of Artistic Director, Valerie Green to use creation, performance, and teaching as a means to link dance and the people of a particular community. The communities we engage shift, depending on the specific project, and have included under privileged youth, adolescents, those with chronic illnesses, immigrants, senior citizens, first generation ethnic groups and aspiring/professional dancers. The word "entropy" refers to the tendency towards disorder in a social system and chaos in motion. Dance Entropy abstracts the potential chaos of the body and creates order through expressive movement reflecting the world within which we live. The dances are bold, at times untraditional. They have included dancing in buckets of water, performers spitting stones, bodies birthed out of fabric cocoons, and dancers perched on platforms in six-foot costumes. Themes explored include examining rites of passion, traditions of culture, and notions of self. By intertwining extreme exploration of human behavior, the movement creates a visible friction. The dynamic images feature unexpected interactions and physical power alongside feminine sensuality. Visually theatrical, the dances have included various uses of fabric, props, and video. The music's range is eclectic: traditional, ethnic, electronic or abstract sound scores. In order to best pursue the above ideals Miss Green created a company home, Green Space, a 1800 sq. foot studio, located in Long Island City, Queens in 2005.

Responding to the need for professional rehearsal space in the New York metropolitan area, Valerie Green and Dance Entropy, Inc., opened Green Space in November 2005. Located in Long Island City, Green Space serves the public by offering discounted services to individual artists and dance companies in a spacious 1200 sq. foot studio. In 2009 the studio expanded adding on the adjacent 600 sq. foot suite to accomodate a dressing room and on-site office to better accomodate our artists. Green Space's mission is to serve the Queens and general dance community by providing an affordable and welcoming environment for rehearsals, classes, and performances. Green Space embraces the diversity of Queens as strength, encouraging exchange on an artistic, educational, and interactive level.
