We are in need of volunteers in the New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and New Iberia areas of Louisiana.

Mentoring/Tutoring

Mentors and tutors serve as caring adults and consistent role models for students. Both of these volunteer opportunities require a weekly commitment to students for a minimum of one semester. Our program is focused on relationship building and supporting the individual student’s interests and needs. CIS mentors and tutors work in conjunction with the CIS Site Coordinator to provide support to students in need.

Periodic Campus Support

For those in the community that would like to volunteer for more than one day a year, but do not have the flexibility or capacity to volunteer consistently for an hour each week through mentoring or tutoring, CIS provides opportunities to support CIS Site Coordinators with indirect volunteer programs. The CIS Volunteer Coordinator will contact the periodic volunteers from time to time with projects CIS staff need assistance with, and the volunteer may help on an as needed basis. These programs can include organizing a food pantry monthly, assisting with paperwork and administrative duties, or packing weekend food bags or organizing a clothing closet.

Done-in-a-Day Volunteer Opportunities

For those with limited free time, Done-in-a-Day opportunities provide a chance to give back by working on a specific project. Done-in-a-Day volunteer activities are also ideal for corporate and civic groups to engage in service. Please check back to the VolunteerMatch website regularly for specific dates for done-in-a-day projects.

Examples of volunteer projects include:

  • Preparing in-kind donations for distribution (school supplies, food bags for breaks, holiday gifts)
  • Assisting with CIS special events (holiday gift distribution, guest speaking, school events)
  • Providing school beautification (planting, gardening, painting, clean-up)

Mission Statement

The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Description

CIS is the nation’s largest and most effective dropout prevention organization and the only one proven to both decrease dropout rates and increases graduation rates. Communities In Schools of the Gulf South provides case management and wrap-around services to over 1,600 students per year. Our case-managed students are the most at-risk students at the schools in which we work. These students may include those who are homeless, living in poverty, have been exposed to trauma, and/or identified as part of a special population. Despite the very real obstacles they face, our case-managed students are succeeding, and our staff help empower them to do so.
