Are you passionate about community-building and the transformative power of theatre? The Chicago Playback Theatre Ensemble (CPTE) is excited to invite you to consider joining our Board of Directors. Since our inception in 2019, CPTE has been committed to building community using Playback Theatre, an interactive form of improvisational theatre, to bring the personal stories of our audience members to life on stage. Our mission is to use our unique approach to storytelling to spark dialogue, broaden perspectives, and promote healing by celebrating and validating the truths of the stories we receive.

About Us:

CPTE is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has been collaborating with community partners in the greater Chicago area since 2019 to create performances and educational workshops that are designed to engage audiences deeply and make a positive impact on the communities we serve. Our work particularly focuses on supporting mental health advocacy, underserved youth, and LGBTQIA+ communities.

We are currently the only professional theatre in Chicago dedicated to Playback Theatre, a unique form of improvisational theatre and storytelling we’ve studied that was created in 1975. Unlike other improv in Chicago, Playback Theatre captures a wide range of human experiences-whether joyful, sorrowful, or somewhere in-between -without emphasizing comedy. The goal is to honor and reflect these stories, creating a moving experience that can be both healing and perspective-altering for the storyteller and the audience.

Our programs are led by our talented ensemble of performing artists who bring extensive experience in performance and improvisation. Many of our members also have professional backgrounds in therapy, education, youth work, and social justice activism. Several have studied with the founders of Playback Theatre and other leading Playback Theatre teachers from around the world.

Role of the Board:

The role of our Board of Directors is pivotal in steering our mission. As a board member, you will provide crucial strategic oversight, help secure necessary resources, and ensure the sustainability of our innovative programs. Your expertise, passion, and commitment are vital as we aim to deepen our impact and extend our reach across diverse communities.

Benefits of Board Membership:

  • Community Impact: Support initiatives that foster healing and community-building
  • Networking: Connect with diverse professionals and community leaders
  • Personal Growth: Unique learning experiences and leadership development
  • Cultural Engagement: Deepen involvement in Chicago’s theatre and storytelling traditions
  • Social Change: Advocate for mental health and support underserved communities.

Commitment:

The Board of Directors at CPTE is a working board. This means that in addition to a financial commitment, board members typically attend monthly board meetings, serve on at least one committee, and participate in special events or performances. The expected time commitment can vary but generally involves several hours per month.

If you are passionate about the arts and community engagement, we would love to hear from you! For more information, check out our Board Information Packet, or visit our website: https://www.chicagoplaybacktheatre.com/join-our-board/. You can express your interest by filling out our Board Application. Applications for serving on the board for the 2024-2025 season are due October 18th. Get to know us and our work at our next show on October 13th.

We look forward to discussing how your unique skills and perspectives can help shape the future of CPTE. Thank you once again for considering this significant role. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and communities throughout Chicagoland.
