MakeAWish Logo

A volunteer translator/interpreter accompanies trained Make-A-Wish volunteers during wish family visits to facilitate clear communication and prevent ambiguity between the volunteer and wish family. Translators/interpreters may also assist with the translation of documents and other organizational material for Make-A-Wish staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with communication efforts between Make-A-Wish staff, volunteers and wish families throughout the wish process.
  • Aid the volunteer wish granting team in discerning the child’s one true wish, while gaining a strong understanding of the reason behind the child’s most heartfelt wish.
  • Act as a reliable, communicative, and productive member of the "wish team" by working closely with the volunteer wish granting team and Make-A-Wish staff to facilitate clear communication.
  • Translate documents and resources for chapter staff.
  • Provide translation services at events attended by wish families.
  • Other duties may be assigned as deemed appropriate.

Location of Opportunity

  • Wish meetings may take place virtually, over the phone, at the wish family’s home, or at a neutral location, such as a restaurant or hospital. Typically, wish meetings are scheduled for weekday evenings or weekends based upon the schedules of the wish-granting team and wish family.
  • Additional tasks may be completed at the chapter office or at your home depending on chapter preferences and the given task.

Volunteer Commitment

  • The average wish requires between 5-10 hours of volunteer work over a span of about 6-9 months. Each wish can vary greatly in the time it takes to grant depending on the requested wish and wish family circumstances.
  • Time commitment for interpreter services on wishes can vary depending on the spoken language, complexity of the wish and family dynamics.
  • Complete appropriate training as deemed appropriate by chapter staff.
  • Attend continuing education courses, as offered by Make-A-Wish chapter staff.
  • Provide and receive ongoing performance evaluation feedback from chapter staff.

About Make-A-Wish Wisconsin

Location:

11020 West Plank Court, Suite 200, Wauwatosa, WI 53226, US

Mission Statement

Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

Description

Make-A-Wish Wisconsin grants over 300 wishes per year to children ages 2 1/2 to 18 living with a critical illness. Our goal is to grant every child eligible for our program a wish.

Hundreds of volunteers are needed across the state in a variety of capacities to help bring hope, strength and joy to wish children and their families. Wish granting, helping with special events and fundraisers, and assisting with office projects are a few examples of how volunteers make a valuable difference.

Make-A-Wish Wisconsin is a not-for-profit organization that relies solely on the generosity of individuals and businesses to fulfill its mission. Gifts of cash and investments, estate gifts, and in-kind contributions are some of the ways funds are raised, and 77% of every dollar raised goes directly to granting wishes.

Make-A-Wish Wisconsin is one of 59 chapters of Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. Over 350,000 wishes have been granted across the nation since the Foundation's inception in 1980, and every day, more than 25 wishes are granted across the U.S.
