We are looking for enthusiastic outdoorspeople to join our Hike Support Team for the Trailblaze Challenge in the Mobile area! Team members must be experienced hikers/endurance athletes with knowledge of local trails (hike locations include Blakely State Park, Dauphin Island, Graham Creek Nature Preserve) who understand equipment and safety, the importance of hydration and preparation for long hikes, and be able to motivate and effectively support hikers ranging in experience, including novice hikers. Highly important is the ability to ensure hikers are supported and feel like they belong to a community. Hike Support team members serve as an extension of Make-A-Wish Alabama and must complete a volunteer background check and onboarding training.
REQUIREMENTS:
* CPR/First Aid Certifications preferred
* Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid certifications preferred
* Attend and support almost all biweekly training hikes in your area preceding the 15-mile hike, and all hikes 15 miles or more. (February 2, February 15, March 1, March 15, March 29, April 12, April 26) * Physical ability to hike 12 miles unsupported with an average overall pace of 25-minutes per mile
* Attend at least 2 of the 3 hike weekends.
* Flexibility and positivity required! Needs on training hikes may change due to last-minute weather plans, hiker needs, or organizational strategy.
* The ability to maintain confidentiality, composure and to follow directions with a smile on!
MAIN RESPONSIBILITES INCLUDE:
1. Participate in over half of the group training hikes beginning February 1/2 through April 2025. Training hikes will mostly be on alternating Saturdays in each area. As the mileage increases, we will require all team members to attend for safety purposes.
2. Review training hike routes trails before each training hike - prepare maps, notes, and pull-out points.
3. Support and get to know hikers during training hikes.
4. Attend 2/3 hike weekends (May 2-4 and May 16-18 on the Pinhoti, and May 30-June 1 on the Cumberland Trail in Chattanooga) to support hikers on the trail and at aid stations. Assisting with set-up, break-down and van shuttling may be included.
5. Assist with flagging trails as needed.

It’s time to say hello to adventure in 2024 with the Make-A-Wish Trailblaze Challenge. You will complete a 12-week training program, ultimately hiking 26.3 miles in one life-changing day on the Pinhoti Trail.
