We are always looking for people to help our mission to conserve and restore all coral species endemic to Cozumel. As a volunteer, you'll have the opportunity to participate in hands-on coral restoration activities, cleaning corals on our coral platforms, planting corals to restore the reef, assisting in research studies, and helping spread awareness of the importance of the marine ecosystem. Your efforts will contribute to preserving Cozumel's vibrant underwater world for future generations.

If you are looking for a more structured engagement to complete your studies, we also offer internships where you will work with Dr German on your research project.

Mission Statement

We aim to restore the Cozumel coral reefs while advancing coral research and fostering marine educational programs.

Description

Dr. German Mendez established the Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration Program in 2017 to address the damage inflicted on Cozumel's coral reefs due to unsustainable development, excessive tourism, and climate change.

The program focuses on cultivating and restoring damaged corals in their aquarium and coral garden, subsequently transplanting them onto the Villablanca Reef. To date, they have constructed 29 coral restoration platforms and successfully planted over 10,000+ coral fragments.

Furthermore, the program conducts research on coral reproduction, diseases, and water contamination. They also offer educational programs to both tourists and locals, empowering them to actively participate in the protection and regeneration of their precious coral reefs.
