About SMART Reading
SMART Reading is a children’s literacy nonprofit that serves kids in Oregon’s highest-need schools with two ingredients critical for literacy and learning success: one-on-one reading time and access to books. We mobilize volunteers to read with PreK through third-grade children, building confidence, literacy skills and a love of reading. SMART Reading provides a meaningful way for Oregonians to make a direct impact in their communities. Join us!

Site Coordinators are the leadership volunteers who are vital to the success of the SMART Reading program at a school site. This is an incredible opportunity to make a difference in the lives of both adult volunteers and students when they need the support more than ever. SMART Reading is not a tutoring program, and teaching experience isn't required. Helpful skills (not all required) include: public speaking, experience with kids and volunteers, records preservation, and computer skills like using email and accessing webinars. This is a time committment of around 4 hours a week. Programs generally run mid-October through mid-May and can vary by school site.

Volunteer Readers read with one assigned child (One-to-One SMART) or to a classroom of students (Classroom SMART). This is a time commitment of around 1 hour per week.

For either volunteer role, a SMART Reading background check, school district background check, and training will be required. Learn more about each role and complete an application at www.smartreading.com/volunteer to get started! If you have any questions, email RVteam@smartreading.org.

Mission Statement

At SMART Reading, we believe that reading is the gateway to learning and opportunity for Oregon’s kids. Every day we mobilize our statewide community to make a direct impact by connecting kids, books, and volunteers who understand that education creates a brighter future for all. Because the simple magic and joy of a shared book can change a child’s life trajectory.

Description

SMART Reading is a children’s literacy nonprofit that serves kids in Oregon’s highest need schools and marginalized communities with two ingredients critical for literacy and learning success: shared reading time and books to keep.

We pair thousands of Oregon kids with community volunteers for regular one-on-one or group read-alouds designed to build confidence, literacy skills, and a love of reading. All of the children we serve also get to choose two books each month to keep. Through the Children’s Book Bank at SMART Reading, volunteers in the Portland area help clean and restore community-donated books that are distributed to thousands more kids to help fill homes and lives with high-interest, inclusive books.

SMART offers a range of volunteer roles including Readers who spend an hour a week reading with students, Site Coordinators who oversee program implementation at one of our sites, Book Bank volunteers who help sort, clean, restore and distribute community-donated books, and more.
