Are you ​ a survivor of postpartum depression, anxiety or other perinatal mood and anxiety disorder and want to provide help and hope to those going through a similar experience?

PSVa's ​P ​eer Mentors provide direct support to new mothers, parents and their families who are struggling with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and ​are an integral part of the recovery and healing process. ​ PSVa Peer Mentors help to reduce the impact of perinatal mental health issues on families and communities in Virginia.

As a Postpartum Peer Mentor you will:

  • establish a connection with the mentee
  • establish how they are doing right now
  • gather information
  • provide support and encouragement
  • provide resources
  • Provide weekly one-on-one support via phone, email, text, or in person for a minimum of 60 minutes.

Peer mentors need to have lived experience with a PMAD and you must be at least 12 months through your recovery.

Requirements:

  1. Complete PSVa’s Volunteer Application
  2. Complete PSVa’s Peer Mentor matching form,
  3. Return calls and emails within 24-hours from mentees,
  4. Provide notes to Peer Mentor Program Coordinator.
  5. Review and sign the Volunteer Agreement.
  6. Attend Peer Mentor Meetings and at least 3 Volunteer meetings per year.

Postpartum Support Virginia’s MISSION is to educate families, healthcare providers and communities about Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) and to provide resources to help new and expectant mothers and their families overcome anxiety, depression, and other PMADs. Postpartum Support Virginia’s VISION is that all birthing people and parents in Virginia will receive information about PMADs, be screened for them during pregnancy and throughout the first year after birth and have access to resources for recovery.

Postpartum Support Virginia is a non-profit and relies on the support of volunteers, generous donors and partnerships with foundations, businesses, community organizations, mental health providers and healthcare providers to sustain our work.
