Training for Playhouse Building Assistants

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: San Diego Habitat for Humanity

Are you interested in putting your construction skills to use? Maybe you want to learn some construction skills or teach others. This could be the role for you! San Diego Habitat for Humanity's Playhouse team is looking for energetic volunteers to help them lead groups in building children's playhouses. You don't need to have any prior knowledge or skills; they will teach you everything you need to know!

This training session will show you how playhouses are put together, what needs to be painted, and how to lead groups in this process. Don't worry though, a Habitat staff member will always be there with you to lead the group.

The playhouses you help build will provide children a secret world where they can create make-believe scenarios that foster their development, leadership, and creativity. They also help San Diego Habitat raise funds to advance their mission of building homes, community, and hope. Join in this unique way to give back to your community by building playhouses for local children, military or veteran families, and children's centers in San Diego!

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

Signing Up: All volunteers must sign up for their shift on San Diego Habitat for Humanity's website.

Time Commitment: Each event lasts about 4 hours and you will be working with 8 - 10 volunteers. All playhouse assistants are asked to commit to volunteering for at least one event per month.

Attire: Comfortable, work clothes that you don't mind getting paint on. Jeans are encouraged. Must have on durable, closed-toe shoes. Tennis shoes or work boots are recommended. This opportunity takes place both indoors and outdoors.

Bring: Bring a water bottle and sunscreen or a hat. San Diego Habitat for Humanity will provide the necessary safety equipment, but you may also bring your own (gloves, safety glasses, etc).

Physical Requirements: Able to stand and walk around, handle power tools, and be fully mobile. The minimum age to volunteer is 18 due to the use of power tools. Unfortunately this opportunity is not able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations and the space where this project takes place is not wheelchair accessible.

Waiver: All volunteers will be required to sign San Diego Habitat for Humanity's Volunteer Waiver. Volunteers will be prompted to sign the waiver when setting up a VolunteerHub account, so it is not necessary to print it out and complete it ahead of time.

Mission Statement

The mission of San Diego Habitat for Humanity is to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope. This is achieved by creating affordable homeownership opportunities in partnership with families and individuals throughout San Diego County.

Description

We partner with families to help build or improve a place they can call home and to find the stability and security they need for a better future. Homeownership can seem like an unattainable dream here in San Diego, but we work alongside future homebuyers to make those dreams become reality. Our programs include:

New Construction - Money fundraised and mortgage payments from previous homes are used to purchase land, and we utilize thousands of volunteer hours to build homes. Homeowners go through a lengthy selection process and join volunteers onsite, contributing 250 hours of sweat equity per adult applicant as their down payment on their home.

Home Repair - We have 2 distinct home repair programs - Neighborhood Revitalization and VetRepair. Neighborhood Revitalization focuses on repairs for homeowners in the neighborhoods where we build new construction. Through VetRepair, we provide repairs for Veteran homeowners throughout San Diego County. Both programs include critical home repair projects (which may include major utility or roof repairs, which need to be subcontracted) or exterior home repair, which is much more volunteer friendly.

ReStore - The ReStore is our discount home improvement center where we accept donations of building materials and home goods. The sale of those items help to fund our mission. We have 3 locations throughout the county - National City, Kearny Mesa, and Escondido - in addition to an online store.
