Help Stop Elder Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation in Western Stark County!

In Western Stark County, there are over 600 individuals (wards) under the care of a court-appointed guardian. The majority of these individuals are seniors or adults with physical or mental disabilities that are unable to make decisions about their health and living situation. To ensure their well-being, Court Angel volunteers visit these individuals in their homes, aiming to bring some joy into their day while also checking for potential signs of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. They ensure that the wards receive the care they are supposed to receive from their guardians and caregivers.

Court Angels then provide the court with up-to-date information about the wards. This information is invaluable to the court when making recommendations or issuing orders for improvements, if necessary. Thankfully, because of this program, most of our wards receive adequate care.

During the visits, volunteers observe the ward's residence and engage in conversations with the wards, guardians, and caregivers to understand the ward's needs. To document their observations and offer recommendations, Court Angels use a standardized reporting form. Generally, ward visits take approximately one hour and volunteers have the flexibility to choose the location within the county that suits them best. Volunteers typically conduct 3-4 visits per month.

To become a Court Angel, applicants undergo a background check, watch a training video, and shadow court staff members on ward visits.

Individuals should possess good communication and listening skills, exhibit friendliness and common sense, be willing to use the provided reporting form, and have a genuine desire to ensure that individuals with serious mental or physical disabilities receive high-quality care.

(Must be 18 or older, pass a background check, and have a valid driver license with own transportation.)
