What is a Weed Warrior?

Weed Warriors are volunteers that assist the parks with the removal of invasive vegetation. They contribute to the overall health of the forest and environment.

In National Capital Parks-East, the Weed Warriors help contain the spread of these invasive species through various methods of control. This allows the native flora to thrive and protects the overall natural beauty of the area so it can be enjoyed by current and future generations.

Why Become a Weed Warrior?

By becoming a Weed Warrior, an individual can make a difference in the park and in the environment. By helping remove invasive plants, Weed Warriors make space for native flora and over the years their accomplishments leave a visible, lasting impact.

Eligibility

Individuals must be at least 18 years of age. Many volunteers include park neighbors, community leaders, and members of park partners.

Individuals under the age of 18 can assist with invasive removals, but they need to do so with a parent or guardian. While their help is appreciated and valued, they are unable to become Weed Warriors.

Requirements

To become an official National Capital Parks-East Weed Warrior and obtain a permit, a few specific steps are required.

1. Complete the Weed Warrior Training, which is provided by park staff. This training operates in two parts. First, an online portion. This is a 3 hour theory session, and is typically held on a Wednesday evening. The second portion is in-person. This is a 3 hour field session that is held in the park on the first Saturday morning after the online training. This training is often held twice annually, although specifics may vary per year. 2. After the National Capital Parks-East training is complete, the Weed Warrior will select an area to adopt. This is where they will remove non-native, invasive plants.
3. The Weed Warrior will remain in contact with park staff and schedule a time to look at their area. Then, a plan of control will be designed by both parties.
4. During the control plan meeting, the Weed Warrior will be given a plant identification quiz in order to ensure complete understanding and identification ability of the plants they are removing.
5. A one-year Volunteer Service Agreement will be issued to the Weed Warrior. There is no minimum time commitment for Weed Warriors; whatever you’re able to donate is greatly appreciated.
