The Justice & Diversity Center (JDC) is starting a new pilot program to provide hundreds of school-aged immigrant children in San Francisco who have experienced abandonment, abuse, or neglect by at least one parent a pathway to legal residency and citizenship.
The JDC has so far identified at least 600 minors within the San Francisco Unified School District who currently lack legal status, entered the United States unaccompanied, or otherwise need immigration legal services. Through the work of volunteer attorneys, the JDC plans to provide these minors with something called Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, which will allow these children to stay in the United States without fear of deportation, to attend school and work legally without fear of reprisal.
Most of these children are primarily Spanish speakers with limited English proficiency. Interpreters will be essential to being able to provide life-changing legal services to these children, and likely many more that the JDC have not even yet identified.
Please consider volunteering today! You don’t need to have legal experience to volunteer!
