National Public Lands Day Dark Sky Monitoring

Help Capitol Reef maintain its status as an International Dark Sky Park! In honor of both National Public Lands Day and Capitol Reef's annual Heritage Starfest event, we are seeking volunteers to assist with sky quality monitoring on Saturday, September 28, 2024. The park has several designated locations for sky quality monitoring, including locations in both the Cathedral Valley and Waterpocket backcountry districts of the park and the Fruita front country district of the park.


Volunteers will pick up their sky quality monitoring device and receive training on its usage on Friday, September 27, during Capitol Reef National Park visitor center open hours: 8:00a-4:30p. They will conduct monitoring at approximately 8:45p (astronomical twilight) on Saturday, September 28. Volunteers will return their recordings and devices during Capitol Reef National Park visitor center open hours: 8:00a-4:30p on Sunday, September 29.
