Help your neighbors improve Tacoma's South End and join the Saturday, September 7th Depave Event from 10 AM - 12 PM!
Pierce Conservation District is hosting a small work party where volunteers will move chunks of concrete from the foundation of a residential garage and place them in a dumpster to be recycled. This work is in preparation for planting an urban habitat garden that will be full of native and pollinator-friendly vegetation.
- Removing concrete and replanting with beneficial plants not only supports wildlife such as insects and birds, but also provides a stormwater benefit by increasing the amount of planted area for rain and stormwater to soak into. As more water soaks into the ground and is used by plants with deep roots, less urban stormwater is able to carry pollutants into the storm drains and out into Puget Sound.
- P.S. If you have another Depave site in mind, please fill out the nomination form here:

Description
The Pierce Conservation District works with the community to improve water quality, promote sustainable agriculture, create thriving habitat, and build a just and healthy food system for all, through education, community engagement, and financial and technical assistance. Our district’s roots run deep in our community. Created in 1949 as part of a national response to the ecological disaster of the 1930s known as the Dust Bowl, we have worked for over 75-years to help local farmers, cities, and citizens address numerous sustainability challenges. Conserving our natural resources for future generations gets more difficult with each year, making the work of Pierce Conservation District more important now than ever.
