ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Description

Facilities Volunteers support the National Park Service’s mission at Fort Pulaski National Monument by maintaining facilities and assisting with park projects to ensure the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of park visitors. Facilities volunteers work safely to extend the benefits of efficient facilities management to all areas of Fort Pulaski National Monument, and by extension, the National Park Service.

Facilities volunteers are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) that is appropriate for the job, as outlined in the job hazard analyses (JHA) provided for each assigned task. Facilities volunteers often work outdoors for long periods of time, sometimes in the heat, cold, rain, or mud.

Safety is the most important part of this role. Facilities volunteers will be expected to uphold the standard of safety set by the Fort Pulaski Facilities Division leadership. Facilities volunteers are also self-motivated, good problem solvers, and good team players. Facilities volunteers are good listeners and are willing to follow instructions. As respected members of the FOPU team, they provide constructive feedback about park operations or problems they are experiencing to supervisors.

Duties:

  • Fully complete all necessary orientation and training as determined by Facilities staff.
  • Assist staff with grounds care, including mowing and weed control.
  • Assist staff with trash pick-up.
  • Assist staff with project-based work, including painting.
  • Carry out minor facility maintenance tasks like cleaning buildings or changing light bulbs.
  • Carry out preservation-related tasks like cleaning headstones, minor carpentry, or masonry repairs.
  • Work as part of a team to accomplish multi-step facilities or project tasks under the direction of a park supervisor.

Volunteers may also be assigned special projects, depending on their skill set or interests.
