ORGANIZATION: Tigard Public Library

Applicant Type:

  • Age 18 years or older
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Strict attention to detail
  • Able to sort alphabetically and numerically
  • Able to push carts of 50+ pounds
  • Able to squat, kneel, bend, lift, use step stool, stretch, and handle books repeatedly
  • Able to work independently on tasks and follow directions
  • Able to communicate with staff in person, by phone, and via email
  • Able to read a computer screen

Key Responsibilities:

  • Shelving books
  • Straightening books on shelves
  • Balancing shelves & edging books
  • Organizing materials alphabetically and numerically on carts for shelving

Training:

1-hour orientation session covering library volunteer expectations, including a tour of the facility, sign-in and badging process, and introduction to staff. Followed by an assessment of alphabetization & numerical ordering and then training on shelving with circulation staff. Then two buddy shifts with an assigned Library Assistant.

Returning volunteers (out of service longer than 3 months) will require a brief half-hour retraining session with their supervisor.

Time Commitment: A minimum commitment of two hours per week and an average of eight total hours per month is requested, with a minimum commitment of six months.

Volunteer and CommunityBenefits: Shelver volunteers play a vital role in ensuring our collection is accessible to patrons. In addition to facilitating the movement of materials, but also inspect and remove damaged items from circulation for repair. Volunteering in this role gives them valuable hands-on experience in library operations and with the Dewey Decimal System. Both library staff and patrons alike highly value their contributions.
