Are you a French-speaker who's passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of immigrant youth? If so, we invite you to join our Immigrant Youth Mentorship Program as a volunteer mentor!
The Challenge Young individuals who arrive in the United States as refugees or immigrants have experienced prolonged periods of displacement. Challenges such as limited English proficiency and a lack of social connections often lead to these youth and young adults not finishing their education. These difficulties are made more intense by the personal experiences and traumas they've gone through, which can hinder their ability to integrate into their new communities.
Our Solution To address the unique obstacles faced by refugee youth, Many Languages One Voice (MLOV)'s Immigrant Youth Mentorship Program pairs eligible mentees (ages 15-24) with positive adult mentors. By connecting refugee youth with caring and supportive mentors from their own community, youth gain crucial assistance and nurturing that ultimately aids in their social integration and pursuit of their future goals.
Your Responsibilities:
Mentorship: Build meaningful relationships with immigrant youth, offering guidance, support, and encouragement as they navigate life in a new culture.
Speaking to Parents: As needed, engage with parents/guardians to discuss program goals, address concerns, and create a supportive network for the immigrant youth.
Weekly Virtual Sessions: Meet with your mentee once a week for an hour for 12 weeks
Your Qualifications:
Ideally, have completed at least some college/university/trade school/professional school
Ideally, conversationally fluent in a language other than English (particularly Spanish, French, Amharic, and Ukrainian)
Live in the United States and ideally, reside in the D.C. metro area
At least 19 years old
Culturally sensitive, open to learning, desire to support youth and young adults
Applications for mentors will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. This is a virtual opportunity, but mentors must live in the United States.

Many Languages One Voice's mission is to foster leadership and provide tools for greater civic participation of immigrants in the District of Columbia who do not speak English as their primary language in solutions that impact their lives.
Description
History Many Languages One Voice (MLOV) grew out of the movement to pass the D.C. Language Access Act in the mid-2000s. It was founded as its own organization in 2010. Today, language access continues to be at the core of what we do, along with parent leadership, youth leadership, and workers' rights.
Core Focus Areas MLOV builds power with D.C.'s immigrant communities by focusing on:
Community Organizing: Community organizing allows historically marginalized communities, such as the immigrant communities we work with, to develop an agenda that reflects their needs and build grassroots power. Ultimately, community organizing can yield lasting social, political and economic change.
Advocacy: Our community organizing and outreach informs us of the communities' needs, which we strive to focus on as we hold the government accountable to the needs of all of D.C.'s residents.
Adult Leadership: Through developing parents' basic digital literacy skills and teaching them how to support their children at school, MLOV helps parents gain 21st century skills and learn how to be a prepared advocate for their child.
Youth Leadership: MLOV engages youth ages 11-24 through after-school, summer, and mentorship programs. In these programs, students grow in their leadership abilities and social-emotional skills while learning about and pursuing opportunities for their futures, including college and career.
