Potencia tutoring is an unpaid, volunteer opportunity for volunteers residing in the United States. The sessions will be online and mostly in a 1:1 setting.

The priority deadline is September 15th, 2024. We will still accept tutor applications after the priority date, but it might take longer for us to find you a match this fall.

About the Opportunity

With only 5% of U.S. adult English language needs being met by existing services, we have been working to make quality language education more available and accessible to adult immigrants. Since 2019, over 300 college students as trained Potencia tutors from six universities in Greater Boston have contributed over 1,000 learning hours to their community members.

This year, we are looking to recruit more volunteer tutors from the community who want to create a long-lasting impact in their communities. We believe that tutoring is an act of leadership beyond just helping others.

After sign-up, we will reviewing your application. If you are approved, you will receive an email with the next steps. We will provide the Potencia tutor training handbook, as well as an online training session we run every month to answer any questions you might have.

Mission Statement

Potencia empowers adult immigrants in the U.S. to gain economic mobility by democratizing access to personalized, low-cost English language education, powered by civic leadership and technology.

Description

Begun as a graduate school project at Tufts University in 2019, Potencia is on a mission to empower adult immigrants in the U.S. to gain economic mobility by democratizing access to personalized, low-cost English language education. In Greater Boston where Potencia primarily serves, only 5% of the adult English learning needs are met by existing services. This language divide is impacting the fabric of our society, affecting everything from economic mobility to health outcomes and social integration.

Since 2019, Potencia has expanded its tutor base to train college students from six universities in Greater Boston who have contributed over 1,700 learning hours to their communities. Organized into chapters at their schools and businesses, tutors engage with learners either in one-on-one or small group formats to help learners achieve their personal learning goals. Classes are held either online or in person, and learners pay a modest fee of $5-$10 per class for commitment to learning, while scholarships are available upon application.
