ORGANIZATION: FLORIDA INTRODUCES PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND NUTRITION TO YOUTH

AmeriCorps Healthy Futures Service Members will serve to motivate youth and seniors to live healthier lives by providing nutritional education through hands-on healthy foods demonstrations, and the provision of healthy meals and snacks. Additionally, some members will participate as coach mentors instructing youth in Soccer for Success or other physical activity programming.

Service Term : August 1, 2024 - July 31, 2025

Schedule/Hours: Seeking a 30 hour a week commitment. Service will start anytime after 9 am and end at 6pm. Members are required to serve for a minimum number of hours throughout the program year depending on their service agreement. These hours including: 675 or 900 hours.

Member Duties:

  • Work directly with community youth and/or seniors teaching classes in nutrition, cooking, and recreational/physical activity.
  • Encourage and support healthy lifestyles for youth and/or seniors, while demonstrating strong and positive class management of participants.
  • Prepare to mentor youth through social emotional learning exercises and wellness activities centered on healthy lifestyle habits including nutrition education, healthy cooking, sports and non-competitive structured play.
  • Regularly meet with site supervisor to evaluate progress and member performance.
  • Distribute food at sites by packing and/or giving out food to our community.
  • Assist with programs such as Soccer for Success, CATCH (Comprehensive Approach to Childhood Health), Build a Bike, Senior Meals, and other special programs.
  • Assist with preparing, day-of, during and at the conclusion of special events
  • Participate in trainings and attend AmeriCorps weekly check ins & monthly meetings.
  • Attend National Days of Service- 9/11 & MLK are mandatory.
  • Abide by all service site policies and procedures, as well as adhere to all AmeriCorps policies.

  • A self-starter who can work independently as well as part of the AmeriCorps’s team
  • Proficiency in computer applications, specifically Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams.
  • Willingness to learn (or familiarity with) physical activity standards for youth
  • Willingness to learn (or familiarity with) MyPlate nutritional standards

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 17 years of age
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License or access to a reliable vehicle
  • Proven track record of the above "key attributes"
  • Affidavit of Moral Character (Notarized)
  • Member must pass a National Criminal History Background check- to include an FBI background check via fingerprints, a local background check, and have their name run through the National Sex Offender database ( nsopw.gov). This is contingent on any member beginning their service year.

Benefits:

  • Living Allowance of $600 (gross before taxes) bi-weekly payroll for term of service
  • Education Award Amounts vary; earned upon completion at the end of term.
  • $2,817.14 - 675 hours
  • $3,697.50 - 900 hours
  • Forbearance on qualified student loans and interest accrual payments while serving (taxable)
  • Professional development and training opportunities (including First Aid & CPR)
  • AmeriCorps service gear (must be worn every day)

FLIPANY’s mission is to empower youth and adults through nutrition and physical activity programs while influencing policy changes for healthier communities.

FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth) is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 2005 by FLIPANY’s President and CEO, Lynne Kunins.

For the past 12 years, FLIPANY has brought customized health and wellness programming to more than 400 partner sites in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties. Our innovative programs fight childhood obesity and hunger by focusing on healthy food preparation, food security, physical education and work-site wellness. FLIPANY’s programming includes Physical Activity, Soccer, Biking, Nutrition and Cooking Education, and USDA Afterschool and Summer Meal Programs.

Lynne and FLIPANY’s Board of Directors are committed to increasing FLIPANY’s outreach and impact by 30% over the next 3 years-We need your help!
