Join us in making a difference! The IHM Center for Literacy (4251 L Street, Philadelphia, PA 19124) is seeking dedicated volunteer ESOL instructors and tutors to empower adult learners at the intermediate level (levels 2 and 3). Volunteers are needed Monday through Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 8:00 PM.
As a volunteer ESOL tutor, you will play a vital role in helping our learners improve their English skills, build confidence, and integrate into American society. You'll also assist with computer skills, workforce development, and citizenship preparation.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver lessons focused on workforce development, civics, and essential life skills.
- Maintain accurate attendance records to ensure consistent learner engagement.
- Provide a supportive and welcoming environment for all learners.
Skills Needed:
- Experience with adult English language learners is preferred, but a passion for teaching and helping others succeed is most important.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, showing empathy and understanding for the challenges they face.
Volunteers will receive an orientation and ongoing support from the Center's Education Administrator.

The IHM Center for Literacy, an educational outreach of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, is committed to facilitation the inclusion of immigrants into American society through the teaching of English language, technology, citizenship, and life skills for the community and workplace. The Center serves multi-ethnic, non-English-speaking adults in the Philadelphia region.
Description
Since 1989, the IHM Center for Literacy has helped facilitate the inclusion of thousands of adult immigrants into American society through English language learning, digital literacy and citizenship. The Center currently serves over 300 adult immigrants from 19 countries. The Center is staffed by more than 20 volunteers, carrying out the Mission under the direction of an Executive Director and a Governing Board. Classes are held mornings and evenings, Monday through Thursday, September through May.
