ORGANIZATION: Hospital for Special Care

Looking for a volunteer to assist the Aquatic Instructor in instructing participants with special needs on water safety and proper swim techniques based on the Red Cross Learn to Swim curriculum and in accordance with the policies, procedures and practices of the Aquatic and Fitness Center. Under the supervision and direction of the instructor, provide one-on-one support to participants by demonstrating, cueing, and providing feedback to reinforce the skill or swim techniques taught.

Lessons take place:

  • Wednesday's and Thursday's 5:45PM-7:00PM
  • Saturday's 12:00PM-2:00PM

Qualifications:

  • Strong swimming ability
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with individuals with special needs - intellectual, developmental or physical disabilities
  • Experience teaching swim lessons

Description

Hospital for Special Care is a private, not-for-profit, 228 bed Long-Term, Acute-Care hospital licensed by the state of CT. as a chronic disease hospital. The hospital is renowned for its expertise in physical rehabilitation, respiratory care and medically-complex pediatrics. In addition, special programs are available in the treatment of spinal cord injuries and illness, acquired brain injuries, strokes and breathing disorders.

We also provide a full range of outpatient services, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy, rehabilitation evaluation, neuropsychology and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. The hospital also includes a 27,000 foot Aquatic Rehabilitation Center, which completes the full spectrum of rehabilitation and community fitness activities offered.

We also have a 28 bed satellite facility located within Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, CT. The satellite serves patients who are medically or surgically complex and/or require specialized care.
