UC Books to Prisoners Fall Benefit Book Sale
ORGANIZATION: IMC - Books to Prisoners
Please visit the new page to apply.
Every fall, B2P holds a big benefit books sale where we sell the thousands of books donated to us that we cannot send into prisons or already have plenty of. And we need lots of volunteer help to pull it off. The sale itself is Saturday, Oct. 12th, but the work of advertising and setting up starts before that!
If you like to take walks, you can hang flyers; if you shop a lot, you can pick up used boxes; like to exercise, you can move the boxes of books around; if you like to organize and alphabetize, you can help arrange the thousands of books on the table tops! And the sale itslef needs staffing, and there's taking down and cleaning afterwards. Good snacks and good company. Added perk: you can pre-shop the sale.

Mission Statement
The mission of U-C Books to Prisoners is to provide books to incarcerated people in Illinois at no cost to them, and to promote education about incarceration and prisons in our community.
Description
UC Books to Prisoners is an Urbana, Illinois based project providing books to people in prison in Illinois by mail as well as through the Champaign county jail library which we operate.
We are an 20 year-old community-powered and volunteer-run organization with a number of easy ways for you to get involved. No experience is required (but it helps if you like to read). It suits most volunteers to give two to four hours a month due to the nature of the work, but if you like, you can volunteer more often,
Our volunteers interact with the incarcerated by reading their book request letters, selecting books from our collection and preparing them for shipment. They also regularly sort through book donations. We also staff a lending library in the Champaign County jail. If you would prefer to work behind the scenes, we can also utilize your unique skills coordinating book drives, fund raising, tech-support, packing boxes, data-base work, developing programs to educate and engage the community around issues of books and prisons, staffing our book sales, and more.
