Overall, the treasurer ensures the financial health and sustainability of our organization. They are responsible for the fiduciary and operational governance of the association and are accountable to its membership and stakeholders/partners. The treasurer is also the chair of the Finance & Governance Committee, ensuring its smooth functioning and that all designated duties are handled within an appropriate time frame.

Treasurer Roles & Responsibilities

The treasurer is entrusted with the following responsibilities:

  • Financial Oversight: Managing the association’s finances, including budgeting, financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations.

  • Strategic Planning: Providing financial insights and guidance to support the association’s long term strategic planning and growth objectives.

  • Governance and Compliance: Ensuring that the association operates in accordance with relevant financial policies, procedures, and legal requirements.

  • Taxes & Annual Statement: Working collaboratively with the accountant and all board members in order to produce accurate financial statements.

NEC Board Member Role & Responsibilities

As an active, voting Board Director on the NEC, the treasurer’s workload is anticipated to include, but not limited to:

  • Attending & actively participating in all NEC required meetings.

  • Proactively knowing & understanding current policies, practices, & procedures, including the By-Laws.

  • Recording meeting minutes for NEC and F&G meetings.

Finance & Governance Committee (F&G) Chair Roles & Responsibilities

The F&G Chair is generally entrusted with the following responsibilities:

  • Acting as liaison between the F&G and the NEC.

  • Ensuring focus on the established scope/work plan and aligned with the Association's strategic plan.

  • Setting agendas, scheduling, & chairing committee meetings.

  • Establishing that clear communication, active work plans, realistic timelines, and appropriate resources are developed to ensure effective and efficient execution of all established mandates.

Commitment To The Association Members

  • Advocating for the organization's mission and engaging in community events.

  • Communicating all relevant initiatives to the association in a timely manner.

  • Ensuring initiatives align with the needs of the association’s members.

  • Providing timely access to progress reports & action plans via the IPMA website.

  • National Executive Committee (NEC)

  • Finance & Governance Committee (F&G)

  • Memberships Committee

  • Certification Committee

  • Partnerships Committee

  • Marketing Committee

  • Professional Development Committee

Term

The term for the treasurer is typically twelve (12) months, but may differ depending on the scope of the committee or mandates. The treasurer encumbered generally remains in place until the member wants to stand down from the role.

Time Commitment

The Chairs are typically expected to commit 40 to 90 hours annually to satisfy their responsibilities to their Committee, the NEC, and the Association. (This translates to approximately 3.5 to 7.5 hours monthly depending on the time of year, committees you are part of, mandates, and the business needs of the organization.) All meetings are held online through ZOOM and/or the IPMA Google Account.

Remuneration and Expenses

The Treasurer position is a benevolent role and therefore does not receive any remuneration to participate in the NEC or on the committees. Any Board or Committee related expenses require Finance & Governance Committee pre-approval and are reimbursed by the association as per the National Executive Members IPMA-Canada Reimbursement Policies and Procedures and/or guidelines established by the Finance & Governance Committee.

Qualifications

  • Financial expertise, ideally with experience in accounting, finance, or related fields.

  • Demonstrated interest in IPMA-Canada's purpose and mission, particularly in HR best practices, the Canadian work force, and the Future of Work.

  • Energy and enthusiasm to actively contribute to board activities and committee efforts.

  • Be driven by both collaborating with others and independent work.

  • Demonstrate strong abilities to communicate & actively listen clearly & effectively.

  • Have strong time management & project management skills.

  • Ability to commit time beyond board meetings for preparation and active participation in organizational activities & committee initiatives.

  • Hold and maintain an active IPMA membership, in good standing (or willingness to join).

  • Previous board or similar experience (a plus).
