ESL Volunteer Teacher Opportunity at African Support Services of New Jersey (ASSNJ)

ASSNJ is seeking passionate and dedicated ESL volunteer teachers to join our team in Jersey City. Our organization is committed to empowering African immigrants by providing them with the tools and support they need to thrive in their new communities. As an ESL volunteer teacher, you will play a vital role in this mission by helping individuals improve their English language skills, which is essential for their successful integration into American society.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead ESL classes on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, offering both morning and evening sessions.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that cater to the varying levels of English proficiency among students.
  • Create an engaging and supportive classroom environment that encourages learning and participation.
  • Assist students in developing their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
  • Provide individualized support and feedback to help students progress in their language learning journey.
  • Collaborate with ASSNJ staff to ensure that classes are aligned with the organization's goals and the needs of the community.

Qualifications:

  • Strong command of the English language.
  • Previous experience in teaching, tutoring, or mentoring is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A genuine passion for education and helping others.
  • Cultural sensitivity and an understanding of the challenges faced by immigrants.
  • Ability to commit to a regular teaching schedule on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

African Support Services of New Jersey (ASSNJ) is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to empowering African immigrants and refugees in New Jersey. We provide a wide range of services designed to help our community members successfully integrate into their new environment. Our programs focus on legal assistance, employment support, educational opportunities, housing assistance, cultural orientation, and health and wellness.

At ASSNJ, we understand the unique challenges faced by African immigrants and refugees, and we are here to offer the guidance, resources, and support needed to overcome these obstacles. Our mission is to promote equity, justice, and well-being within the African community, fostering a sense of belonging and helping individuals and families achieve a better quality of life in New Jersey.
