One of the most difficult part of new arrivals’ transitions to life in the United States is settling into and learning to navigate their neighborhoods. The seemingly mundane tasks that comprise our days such as taking the CTA, going to the grocery store, or walking to our children’s schools can pose very real challenges for people who are in the early days of resettlement. To this end, Heartland Alliance is seeking volunteers to greet our new Chicago neighbors and help them learn to navigate their neighborhood.
Volunteers will visit a newly arrived refugee family approximately an hour to two hours a week for two months to help them learn the way to a few key locations in their neighborhood and how to navigate the CTA. Some of the locations include:
· Heartland Alliance’s office at 4822 N Broadway Ave.
· Grocery stores with culturally familiar foods
· Children’s schools
· Doctor’s offices
· Medical Clinic
· Pharmacy
· Nearest Hospital
· Show people how to use Google Maps
