GREEN RIVER CLEANUP: Saturday, September 14th, 2024
In honor of the 9/11 National Day of Service, Mammoth Cave National Park will host a canoe/kayak cleanup of the Green and Nolin Rivers.
***Prior experience with canoeing and/or kayaking is required to participate in this event! ***
EVENT DETAILS:
Date: Saturday, September 14th*
Meeting Place: Green River Ferry parking area on the south side of the river (at the end of Green River Ferry Road, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, 42259)
Meeting Time: 7:30 a.m. CST for check-in, kickoff, and safety briefing
Timeframe: Participants will choose between a Short Paddle (8 miles, approx. 5 hours) and a Long Paddle (11 miles, approx. 8 hours). All boats will be off the river by 6pm.
Provided: Local liveries will provide canoes, kayaks, and life jackets/PFDs, but participants can bring their own if desired. The park will provide gloves, trash bags, and litter grabbers.
Transportation: Volunteers must provide their own transportation to the Green River Ferry parking area on the morning of the event. Livery shuttles will transport volunteers to and from the put in/take out locations.
Bring: Water, food/snacks, sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, insect repellant, change of clothes (optional)
Age Limit: Persons under 18 years of age are welcome to participate in this event, but they cannot sign up for opportunities through Volunteer.gov. A parent or legal guardian can sign up a minor for this opportunity by emailing MACA_VIP@nps.gov. (Volunteers under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the duration of the event!)
Important Safety information:
- Coast Guard approved PFDs/life jackets are required to be worn by all paddlers, regardless of age, while on rivers inside park boundaries.
- Alcohol is strictly prohibited on rivers inside park boundaries.
*This is an outdoor event and is therefore dependent on weather conditions. If river conditions are hazardous, the event will be rescheduled. Please check the Volunteer Page on the park's website for updates and/or cancellations closer to the day of the event.
