Volunteer Opportunity: Security Engineer for Mental Health App Development Team

Location: Remote
Commitment: Flexible hours, 5-10 hours per week
Duration: 3-6 months (with possibility for extension)

About Us: We are a dedicated team of volunteers working on a meaningful project to develop a mental health app designed to reduce the stigma of depression and improving mental health by creating a journaling app that helps users journal together in a community. Our mission is to create an engaging, user-friendly app that empowers users to take charge of their mental well-being through creative journaling. We are seeking a talented Security Specialist to bring our vision to life with a beautiful and intuitive user interface.

Role Overview: As a Security Specialist, you will be responsible for identifying and mitigating security risks throughout the app's development and deployment. You will collaborate closely with developers, DevOps, and other team members to implement robust security measures that protect user data and comply with industry standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct security assessments and vulnerability testing on the app’s architecture and codebase.
  • Develop and enforce security policies, standards, and guidelines for the project.
  • Implement encryption, authentication, and access control measures to protect sensitive user data.
  • Collaborate with developers to ensure secure coding practices and review code for potential security flaws.
  • Monitor the app’s security posture and respond to potential threats or breaches.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest security trends, tools, and best practices to proactively address emerging threats.
  • Educate the team on security awareness and the importance of maintaining a secure development environment.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience in cybersecurity, with a focus on application security and data protection.
  • Strong understanding of encryption, authentication, and access control techniques.
  • Familiarity with security testing tools (e.g., OWASP ZAP, Burp Suite) and secure coding practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant security standards and regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and mitigate security risks.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
  • Passion for mental health and a commitment to creating a secure and trustworthy app.
