The housing helpers will help set up new homes for newly arrived refugee families. When a new family arrives in the US through USCRI, we help find them a new apartment and we also help with furnishing that new apartment. Almost 100% of the furniture and other household items are donated by the Albany community.

The housing helpers time will be spent lightly cleaning this new apartment, and then setting it up. This includes setting up the kitchen with pots/pans/dishes. We make the beds and set up toys and books for any kids in the families.

This is such an important oportunity, this is a families new home, we want to make them feel as welcome as possible. Families often arrive late at night so it is so wonderful to be able to bring them to their new home. They can then sleep in their new warm bed, in their safe apartment, and have breakfast with their family the next day using the pots/pan and dish sets that are ready for them in their new home.

These apartments are mostly in the city of Albany, however many are also in Watervliet and a few in Troy. The housing for these families have to be affordable and on a bus route since they often have little access to bank accounts in their home countries, or they could have spent their life savings trying to get to the US, and they have little access to personal vehicles.

About U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) Albany

Location:

99 Pine Street, Albany, NY 12207, US

Mission Statement

To address the needs and rights of persons in forced or voluntary migration worldwide by advancing fair and humane public policy, facilitating and providing direct professional services, and promoting the full participation of migrants in community life.

Description

The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) is a national voluntary agency that contracts with the federal government to resettle refugees from all over the world in welcoming communities throughout the United States. USCRI Albany opened its doors in 2005, and now serves hundreds of refugees each year, helping them connect with the resources and services they need to adapt to their new homes in the Capital Region. Our mission is to help refugees become self-sufficient, contributing members of our community who can again dream of a hopeful future for themselves and their children. We act to defend human rights, promote self-sufficiency and education, and forge community partnerships through a full range of services and programs.

Refugees flee their homes, businesses, farms, and communities in order to escape war and persecution. Some 70,000 refugees come to the United States each year at the invitation of the federal government, seeking a better life for their families. USCRI's Albany Field Office resettles nearly 400 refugees each year in the Capital Region.
