Volunteers in this position work alongside of the teachers in Dorenbecher Children's Hospital to support pediatric patients during their hospital stay. Since many of these patient will spend mutiple days, even weeks in our Oncology Unit and Acute Care Units, we rely on volunteers to provide bedside help with their homework and othr academic activities provided to us by their teachers to keep them current and up to date when they return home to their regular class room.
A volunteer in this position may work with k-12 students either in the patient's room or in the class room located in the hospital on each floor. The normal shift for this position is from 9:30 am-12:30 pm once each week, or multiple times if your availability allows. Retired teachers and academics really enjoy this position, but current/past students with an understanding of many subjects could benefit from these interactions as well.
This program runs yearly following the school schedule of the Multnomah School District, beginning each September and ending in June with summers off. Please indicate your interest in thehis program when you apply.

Description
Healthcare Volunteers provides assistance in the achievement of departmental objectives by effectively utilizing volunteer resources in harmony with the institution’s goals, objectives and mission, ultimately improving the experience of patients, families, and visitors. Volunteers strive to:
- Serve patients, families, and visitors by spending quality time visiting and assisting them to promote the delivery of outstanding service.
- Assist staff in order to expedite patient treatment through non-medical services as requested, as well as to achieve greater knowledge in areas of interests leading to competent and skilled volunteers.
- Assist the unit, clinic, or assignment area to promote a safe and welcoming environment.
