About Shelter Movers

Shelter Movers is a national, volunteer-powered charity that provides free moving and storage services to individuals and families fleeing abuse. Our vision is simple yet powerful: support people, primarily women and children, transition to a life free of violence, with the support of local businesses and community partners.

Role

As a Mover or Driver, you’ll be at the heart of our mission, physically moving the client’s belongings into a vehicle and transporting to a predetermined location. Each move consists of a group of 2-7 movers to assist with loading and unloading. Vehicles are provided for the move, and movers who have a valid driver’s license are welcome to register as drivers.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet your team at the scheduled time and location.
  • Follow the Lead Mover and Move Coordinator’s directions, and maintain clear communication with the Lead Mover and other movers to ensure a smooth, safe move.
  • Handle clients' belongings with care as you move in and out of vehicles, and transport them to a predetermined location.
  • Uphold Shelter Movers’ protocols and procedures

Short Commitment, Big Impact:

  • Each move varies from 3-5 hours
  • Flexible Scheduling: Time commitment is based on a per-move basis. Volunteers can work around their schedule and sign up for moves based on their availability.

*minimum of 1-2 movers per month (4-8 hours) is encouraged.

Required Skills

  • Passion for Shelter Movers’ mission of supporting people fleeing violence and abuse
  • Able to lift moderately heavy boxes/furniture
  • Ability to protect client confidentiality and volunteer confidentiality
  • Awareness of appropriate boundaries, compassion fatigue and self-care
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • A long term interest in the Gender Based Violence (GBV) sector is considered an asset
